Tech Tip
Product: AMI Series 15 Rev D1
Tech Tip #: TTSCSI.006
Originator: Don Burns
Date: June 1992
Subject: CD ROM Compatability Report
The following CD-ROM units listed below were tested for compatibility with
the AMI Series 15 Rev D1 SCSI controller. The 1.09 host and the 1.0A local
BIOS's were used.
CD-ROM units: SONY CDU-541-00
NEC CDR-82, "Intersect"
TOSHIBA TXM-3201A1
HITACHI CDR-1750S
DOS 5.0 (all tests were performed with ASPIKERN.SYS v1.06)
DOS enviorment, using COREL SCSI driver v1.01c
1. This software is installed using the install command and then selecting
the proper configuration.
2. All the devices worked, except for the Hitachi CDR-1750S.
The following error message was given: "Audio information not available"
Windows 3.1 enviorment w/ COREL SCSI UTILITIES v1.01c
1. This software is installed using the RUN "install" command from
within Windows 3.1. No configuration is needed.
2. All the devices worked, except for the Hitachi CDR-1750S.
The following, "contradictory" messages were given.
"Audio information not available"
Performance tests not performed (SEEK and READ), on "AUDIO DISK"
Windows 3.1 enviorment with Windows supplied drivers
Add the following two statements to the CONFIG.SYS file:
a. DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MCICDA.DRV
b. one of the following:
DEVICE=C:\ASW410\ASWCDCHI.SYS /D:ASPICD0 /I
DEVICE=C:\ASW410\ASWCDPAN.SYS /D:ASPICD1 /I
DEVICE=C:\ASW410\ASWCDHIT.SYS /D:ASPICD2 /I
DEVICE=C:\ASW410\ASWCDNEC.SYS /D:ASPICD3 /I
DEVICE=C:\ASW410\ASWCDSNY.SYS /D:ASPICD4 /I
DEVICE=C:\ASW410\ASWCDTSH.SYS /D:ASPICD5 /I
ASWCDxxx, where xxx = CHI is for CHINON
= PAN is for PANASONIC
= HIT is for Hitachi
= NEC is for NEC
= SNY is for SONY
= TSH is for Toshiba
c. RESULTS: *All devices work in the Windows environment with
Windows 3.1 supplied drivers.
OS/2 v2.0
1. When runnig CD-ROM's in OS/2, the "32 bit driver mode" must be
disabled in the ECU.
2. There is a problem with the Hitachi CDR-1750S. Also there is a
problem with the NEC Intersect drive. The system does not "recognize" that
the eihter the Hitachi or the NEC drives are present. The SONY and the
TOSHIBA both work.
Our tests are consistent with the OS/2 documentation. They claim
compatibility with only TOSHIBA, and IBM CDROM devices.
3. As stated in the OS/2 root dirctory (README file), there is some
audio breakup, when graphics are read from disk.
Interactive UNIX v3.0 & 3.0.1
1. Bustek 742A driver was used for the test
2. Audio was not tested (not supported)
3. Text files were read using the "dd if=/dev/rdsk /cd0t3
of=/tmp/cdjunk bs=2048 count=200" which reads 200 blocks of 2048 bytes
into a file "../tmp/cdjunk", the "tmp" directory must already be present.
RESULTS:
All units read text files properly. I was not able to "mount" any of the
CD-ROM devices.
SCO UNIX rel 3 v2.2, ODT v1.1
1. Audio is not supported.
2. The following commands (a-d), were used to "install" the CD-ROM
devices.
a. mkdev cdrom ( when prompted, configure the device for the proper
id, LUN, and host adpter # )
b. mkdev high-sierra
c. mount /dev/cd0 /mnt ( this step needs to be repeated for each
individual drive )
d. cd mnt (this directory should represent the contents of the
CD-ROM )
SCO UNIX rel 3 v2.4
SCO claims that audio is supported in this version. We were not able to
test audio for two reasons. First, we do not have a standard UNIX, CD-ROM
disk with audio tracks. Secondly, we do not have documetnation with the
v3.24 upgrade. The command for audio is not currently known. My
attempts to contact SCO tech-support were not productive. The following
information is needed for future contact with the SCO Corp:
The following commands (a-d), were used to "install" the CD-ROM devices.
a. mkdev cdrom ( when prompted, configure the device for the proper
id, LUN, and host adpter #, choose to make the device high-sierra)
b. mkdev high-sierra
c. mount /dev/cd0 /mnt ( this step needs to be repeated for each
individual drive )
d. cd mnt (this directory should represent the contents of the
CD-ROM )
XENIX rel 2 v3.4
CD-ROM is not supported
AT&T rel 3 v2.2 UNIX, w/ CHANTAL drivers
There is limited support for any Removable Media Device when using
CHANTAL's drivers. Its use is limited to ejecting, allowing and
disallowing an eject, and spin-up, spin-down functions. As far as reading
and using the media, I do not currently know this procedure.
Any questions should be directed to the SCSI Dep't.
